Smallcakes: A Cupcakery That's Not so Small

The best part of wedding planning has begun: cake tasting!

Before getting engaged, I was dead set on baking my own wedding cupcakes/cake; however, I'm a realist. With friends and family coming to Colorado for the event, I want to have time to celebrate with them. I know that I'll want to visit with everyone and I won't be able to have as much stress-free fun if I do my own baking. Because I live in Denver, there are some excellent bakeries that offer both gluten-free and dairy-free cake options. Several of my guests are gluten-free, and I want to be able to eat my own cake, so I'm searching for a cake that tastes just as good or better than something I could make myself.

My first stop for tasting was Smallcakes. Like Buddy the Elf, when someone says, "#1 Gluten & Dairy Free cake in Denver!", I just have to try it. Scheduling a cake tasting was rather simple: download the wedding form and email at least 24 hours before you want to pick up your wedding sample box. I requested that my sample was was gluten-free and dairy-free.

When I went to pick up my box, there was a slight miscommunication--I was at the Lone Tree location, but my cupcakes were in Castle Rock. This wasn't a huge deal, more of a minor inconvenience, and I got an extra cupcake out of it. I bought D'Wayne a pupcake, and we headed to Castle Rock.

The cupcakes were ready for me. Cupcakes acquired, we headed home. It was only noon, which meant I would have to wait five hours before I could eat any of the cupcakes! I put them on the kitchen table and tried not to think about them.

I can't say I've ever agreed with advertising that claims the best of something, but these cupcakes weren't falsely advertised! In our complimentary wedding sampler box, Sam and I received six different full-size cupcakes.

These cupcakes were huge. I cut each cupcake in half to split with Sam. The texture of all of the cupcakes was impeccable. Often, gluten-free cakes are dry, or crumbly. This gluten-free, dairy-free sponge was a consistent texture throughout. If I didn't know they were gluten-free, I wouldn't have thought they were! I decided we'd start with the wedding cake. Traditionally, wedding cake is a white cake (rather than the slightly yellow sponge you're used to). The cake had an almond flavor, and the frosting was smooth with just the right amount of sweetness. To my surprise, this was my favorite cake.

We ate our way through the box. All of the cakes were good--even the Boston cream one. My only complaint is that I couldn't eat the chocolate peanut butter one. That one, the baker told me, has dairy. It's sitting in the box, taunting me, waiting for Sam.

Will I order from Smallcakes for my wedding? It's too soon to say; we still have a few other bakeries to check out before we make our decision, but Smallcakes left a strong impression.
