D'wayne "The Dog" Beardsley

On April 25, Sam and I officially adopted a greyhound. A former racer, we adopted the most muscular couch potato I've ever seen. Her racing name was LK's Maleficent. Although I thought this was fitting, we determined that if we were to keep her (we fostered first) her name would become D'wayne.

We started the process to adopt a greyhound in February. Our adoption coordinator at the Colorado Greyhound Adoption met with us to do a home visit and go over some greyhound things. She told us that there was a long list of people waiting to adopt, but because we didn't have any preferences--we just wanted a greyhound--we might get to adopt faster. Only a few weeks later, Pat called to ask if we would consider fostering. They had a group of dogs coming soon and not nearly enough fosters. If we fostered, we'd have first dibs on the dog after it was ready for adoption.

We decided to take a chance and bring home a dog that didn't know how to use stairs, had never been inside, never had multiple comfy beds--let alone one, and didn't get regular pets. Even though Maleficent pooped in the house a few times, broke our television, and destroyed my night guard, there was no way we could see her adopted by another family.

If we could've, we would've adopted her right then and there; however, per CGA rules, dogs have to be spayed/neutered before they can be adopted. The agreements that CGA has with the kennels where the dogs come from dictate this. We began using her name-to-be and impatiently waited for her "spa day."

One of the best aspects of having a dog is making dog treats! When we knew we were adopting, I started saving bacon grease. The perfect additive to any dog biscuit, this also solves the issues of what to do with bacon grease after all the bacon is gone.

One of D's favorite toys is a pink flamingo that we call Franie. I made her treats Franie shaped and threw a few squirrels in there. What dog doesn't go crazy for squirrels?!

D'wayne's First Homemade Dog Treats

1 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1/2 cup peanut butter (I used crunchy)

1 cup water

2 Tbsp bacon grease

Preheat the oven to 350º.

Mix together oil, peanut butter, and water (there's no need to use a stand mixer).

Gradually add the flour mixture.

If you live in a super dry climate (like Colorado) you might need to add some extra water.

The dough should be pretty dry--just make sure you got all the shaggy flour bits incorporated.

Knead the dough, then roll out so it's a 1/4 inch thick.

Use your favorite cookie cutter to cut out shapes.

Bake for 20 minutes.

Allow the treats to cool before you feed them to your furry friend.
